Email status will not change to "read"

User is on outlook 2007 sp1 and at some point, the mail just fails to change
status to read even if it is chosen manually to "show as read" I think
there must be bigger issue going on as outlook will no longer auto
send/receive either. If I exit outlook, when i open it again, all mail we
have looked at now shows as read and outlook is working normally.

Have you tried creating a new profile?
