Email scanning off, but do I want to send 'worms'?

Outlook 2003 on XP Pro with Norton Systemworks 2006.

Turned off NSW's email scanning (both In & Out) and got an alert from
NSW that Worm protection was turned off too. Is that a problem?

Turned 'Out' scanning back on and worm protection was re-enable, but
now I'm almost back to where I started, i.e., vulnerable to having the
email shown as 'SENT', when in fact, it wasn't due to the ISP timing
out, caused by a lengthy NSW scan.

Any suggestions?

If all email scanning is turned off, am I at risk of unknowingly
sending my friends any 'worms'?

Not as long as your antivirus program also has an on-access or real-time
scanner, as most do, and you continue to run it. You do not need to scan
incoming or outgoing mail.
