can't send email

I am able to receive emails just fine, but I am not able to send them. Each
time, a pop up appears asking me to verify my username and password for my
server. I type it in, click ok and the pop up comes back. Why isn't it
accepting my info? I have double and triple checked that the pop server is
set up correctly; this should not be the problem. I am using Norton virus
protection and have out-going email scanning turned off. What else can I try?

Chances are, that problem is caused by your antivirus program.
Norton antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
Just turning off email scanning in Norton is seldom sufficient.
The only way you can prove or disprove that Norton is the culprit is to
uninstall it, followed by using their debris removal tool:

Another option is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail, which is more
resistant to the adverse effects of overly intrusive antivirus products:

If it is Norton causing the problems, after I uninstall it, will I be able to
reinstall it and prevent these problems from occuring again? Or is there
another protection program I should use?

If after uninstalling Norton, the problem with Windows Mail is cured,
then you have two choices:
1. Upgrade to Windows Live Mail, then reinstall Norton, but leave its
email scanning disabled. OR
2. Keep Windows Mail but replace Norton with one of the free antivirus
programs. The ones known to be compatible with Windows Mail are:

AVG free edition:

or
Avast free edition:

However, with either of those, during the install phase you must select
'custom' install, and then deselect the email scanning module so it won't install.
