Email notification alert w/o new email message

The envelope icon appears in the system tray with the
accompanied email notification sound. But a new email
cannot be seen in the Inbox or any other folder.

Is this a known issue? Is there a fix? Did I really see
an email but then it was wiped out or dropped from our
server?

My workstation is Windows 2003 with Outlook 2003 in an
Exchange 2003 environment.

More than likely a piece of mail you have set by rules to permanently
delete.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After searching google.groups.com and finding no answer, dcarter asked:
