Email messages not opening correctly

I have exactly this same (below) problem submitted by "Wander"; I have
reviewed the helpful responses. I have been on Vista for 1.5 years (and,
therefore, Windows Mail. This problem has just occurred in past few days. I
checked just now in Windows Updates and find that IE8 shows that it was
installed 8/22/09 - today!!!???? I was under the impression that I had been
using IE8 for some time - but only find one other date shown in March of 2009
for this installation with the comment "cancelled"?? I checked for Patch
KB9722060 (as indicated in the earlier response) and do NOT find that this
was installed. Is this a problem? Any help will be very much appreciated!!

Subject: Windows Mail not opening emails right 7/26/2009 12:45 PM PST

By: Wander In: microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail

I have messages in my inbox. I have the preview pane open. It doesn't show
anything when the message is clicked. So I double click the messages and it
has the original message as an attachment in the message that opens. So I
click the attachment and then it tells me that Windows cannot find such and
such file, check spelling and try again. Arrrgghhhh.

Plus all the emails that I had previously saved as save as in regular file
folders as .eml on my computer instead of opening up as a regular email,
they open as if the origianl email is an attachment and give me the same
message.

One thing I really hate about windows stuff is they are always changing the
looks of it and how it works and it never works right for long before it
messes up like this email stuff.

Can anyone help me? I am not a computer person.

Thanks for your response; I did run Windows Update manually; however, emails
still not opening properly. Getting message now that "Windows Mail not
responding". Email eventually opens but, as below, with original email as an
attachment - then the attachment will not open - message: "Windows cannot
find file, etc."

Any further suggestions would be most appreciated!

Did install KB972260 - no success; have since uninstalled IE8 - BUT the same
problem remains??

Thanks!

Thanks very much for your help. I have one more inquiry and then, I promise,
I'll go away :) Whenever I am trying to open an email (which, of course, at
present I cannot properly do without saving the attachment (email) and then
viewing), my computer sounds as though it is powering up and down. This does
not happen with any other programs - i.e. Internet, etc.?? I realize that
this is a hardware problem, but have you had any such complaints from Windows
Mail users?

Thanks again for all your help!

I can't say that I've ever heard that particular complaint.
Before you blame the hardware, try an alternate email program.

It seems you need to be more specific about what "sounds as though it is
powering up and down" means. I can understand that you are not clear about
what it means; in other words, you don't know what the sound is. It would
help if you can get someone more familiar with computers to help identify
the sound.

The sound is probably a drive of some type, such as a hard drive or a CD-ROM
or DVD. Your system can be set to power-down a hard drive that is not the
primary hard drive. Other drives such as DVD drives automatically power down
when not used. You might have some software installed that accesses the
drive and most other software does not do that. It is probably not Windows
Mail but it could be something else that was installed in your system that
executes when WinMail does. It very well could be software used by WinMail
to process attachments, since attachments are processed by whatever software
that is associated with the file type.

Thank you, Sam Hobbs,

Please bear with me one more time.
1) I have corrected the “powering up and down†sound; I took the cover panel
off the tower and cleaned it of dust, etc. (I had recalled someone once
saying his computer made a noise, and he cleaned same, and the sound
disappeared; it worked for me also, thankfully, and is now MOST quiet
2) I have reinstalled IE8
3) I have checked to be sure that all updates and patches are in, which I
believe they are
4) I have just un-installed Windows Live Mail, which was performing exactly
as is Windows Mail
5) Windows Mail:
a) can create mail
b) sends and receives quite timely
c) going from one (any & all) function to another is delayed, taking about
20 seconds with message: “Windows Mail (Not Responding)†– with screen
turning “whiteâ€
d) going from folder to folder – with delay and, of course, no emails
opening in folder: “Inbox – Windows Mail (Not Responding)â€
e) main problem still exists – CANNOT see emails in the preview pane; when
double-clicking the message (or selecting “Open), the email appears (after a
delay) as an attachment, and the attachment CANNOT be opened: “Cannot findâ€,
etc. Only WMV files open OK – not JPG, HTML, TXT, etc.
6) IE works fine; all other programs are working properly EXCEPT Windows Mail

Any additional suggestions for correcting this Windows Mail problem will be
most greatly appreciated.

BTW – I am using (and have been for years) Norton Antivirus products and am
presently using Norton Internet Security.

Many thanks!

I get a delay such as you describe when I create a new message, but only
then. I suspect it is because I have nearly 2 thousand contacts and it takes
time to read all of them. That does not explain your other delays. I know
that Norton/Symantec is known to cause problems. I doubt that it is a
hardware problem. I don't know what else to say. I hope someone else can be
more help.

I can suggest something else. Download and install the Sysinternals Process
Explorer from:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

Or download and install the Sysinternals Suite (which includes the Process
Explorer) from:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb842062.aspx

Then execute the Process Explorer. It is quite technical and might be too
technical for you. You should spend a few minutes at least becoming familiar
with it. Then when WinMail does it's delay thing, you can watch what is
happening. You might not see anything relevant or you might not be able to
understand what happens, but if you are able to see something relevant, then
that could help diagnose the problem. For example, there might be some other
program you have installed that is executing even though you are not aware
of it and if that is true then by using Process Explorer you will hopefully
see it the other program executing.

Norton security products are among the top three troublemakers for
Windows Mail. Symptoms often don't surface until several months have
gone by, or until an update occurs.
First, be sure to disable its email scanning, for the reason explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

Disabling the Norton program is often insufficient. Do a trial uninstall,
followed by using their debris removal tool:

I am still battling with Windows Mail (opening and reading the mails on our
second computer), refusing to buy new hardware (YET) to correct a software
problem - everything else works fine!??

Did try to uninstall Norton when I realized I did not have a disc to
reinstall - and had to call them - my bad!

Did want to get back to you, however, with information from the process
explorer, having viewed same while trying to open an email - many, many times:

Windows Mail (when idle) - PID: 3480; CPU -0-
System Idle: CPU (approx) 93. - 94.00

When attempting to open an email:
Windows Mail - CPU (approx) 45. - 49.00
System Idle: CPU (approx) 45. - 46.00

All other items with small measure of CPU - though some higher on occasion:
Approximate readings:
"Sysinternals Process Explorer: 3.00 - 4.60
"Deferred Procedure Calls" - at times 7.66 to 12.00 - should this be??
Hardware Interrupts: - 1.00 - 4.00 ???

ALSO - when lately the system needs to restart with an update, etc. (I never
shut it down), I receive this message:

"WINDOWS MAIL COULD NOT BE STARTED BECAUSE ANOTHER INSTANCE OF IT IS STILL
RUNNING ON YOUR COMPUTER. PLEASE LOG OFF OF WINDOWS, AND THEN RESTART
WINDOWS MAIL. IF THE PROBLEM PERSISTS, SAVE YOUR WORK, AND THEN RESTART YOUR
COMPUTER.". (However, no other instance appears to be running???)

Perhaps this might shed some light on the problem??

Thank you again very much for your time in a final effort to rectify this
problem with Windows Mail.

A few things . . . . . just thoughts . . . .

Close mail completely. Then check the Task Manager, right click in a blank
area on the Task bar across the bottom of your screen - select Open Task
Manager - in the "Processes tab" look for wmmail.exe, select it if you see
it and "End Process (button at bottom). That may not be closing correctly
and cause issues. Reboot the PC and mail and see if that fixes any of your
mail issues.

You need not be so worried about uninstalling Norton - you can get Windows
Security Essentials (download from Microsoft) for free. You can use the
"Uninstall Programs" to remove it, but you also have to go to the Symantec
website to get the "cleanup utility" to remove little traces of the software
that get left behind during the uninstall. Get that and run that as well to
see if that fixes any of your problems. And again, when you are ready to
reinstall a security program you can download Windows Security Essentials.

And lastly, that noise could be indicative of a soon to occur hard drive
crash. They frequently make intermittent noise, sometimes for months,
before a crash. Sometimes this noise can sound like a hand crank can opener
or metal scraping. Even new hard drives can fail. So BACK UP NOW if you
have important data on that PC.

Instead of uninstalling your antivirus, another option is to upgrade to
Windows Live Mail, which is more resistant to the adverse effects of overly
intrusive antivirus products: http://download.live.com/wlmail

These things can be difficult and frustrating to diagnose. I am sorry that
there is not much more I can say that I did not say in previous replies.

If you do as slk759 suggested and WinMail is still executing after you have
closed it, then what I said previously is more likely to be relevant; that
is, that there is another program using WinMail. I am not sure how to
determine what program that is. The task manage is likely to tell you, but
probably you will need to more familiar with computer software to be able to
spot it.

Since you have the Process Explorer installed, you could save the list of
processes and then send the list to someone that might help. Do the save
after you have closed WinMail, so the list of processes shows what is
running then. It probably would be safe to post the list here, but I don't
want to recommend it in case there is sensitive (personal) data in it.
Probably not, but I don't want to take a chance on the possibility of
exposing any data to the world that could be used improperly. You can send
me the list; you can get my email address from this message, just remove the
removethis part. Note that my name in the email address is Gate, since the
email address is my gateway to the world and is the address I use in case I
might get spammed.

Although most people (including me) around here would recommend getting rid
of Norton entirely, I suspect that the main problem is something else.

This is an old thread. I am posting this in case anyone can help. I am
posting this for Noni; I am trying to help them but I do not know them other
than the messages in this group.

They sent me some spreadsheets gathered from procmon. I processed the data
and created a list of processes that I am not sure what they are.

Apparently there is something that is keeping WinMail open for them, but no
one knows what it is. If anyone recognizes any of the processes listed below
as being one that can cuase the problem, then I hope identifying it will
help. If anyone recognizes any of these, then perhaps it would help identify
them in order to simply eliminate them from the list of suspects.

Does anyone know if mobsync.exe can sychronize email? I have remmoved it
from the list below, but it seems to be a possibility, if it can sychronize
email.

CLMSServer.exe
eDSService.exe
eRecoveryService.exe
ipoint.exe
itype.exe
mDNSResponder.exe
RichVideo.exe
RtHDVCpl.exe
SearchFilterHost.exe
SearchProtocolHost.exe
WUDFHost.exe
