email messages hide under subfolders

I have had this problem for a while now and I am finally at my wits end.
Whenever I have an incoming email and there is another email that I have not
deleted it will go and I will see + and I have to click on the + to get to
the message. It also does this in all my folders and makes finding messages I
real pain. Can somebody please help[! This is new and was not doing this
before.
