Email Messages are Jumbled

Every message that arrives in my inbox displays jumbled when viewed in
Windows Mail. But the same message viewed in Thunderbird looks fine. This
is an IMAP server and as such the message is staying on the server.

It doesn't seem to matter whether I view the message in TBird or WinMail
first.

The problem is that there is a blank line between

"Date: Tuesday, January 08, 2008 8:30 PM"
and
"Envelope-to: (e-mail address removed)"

By convention, the first blank line separates the hidden headers from
the body text of the email.
Tbird is not following the convention.

Show your mail provider the source code of that message and have
them explain why there is a blank line in the middle of the headers.

thanks for pointing that out--but that makes it seem even stranger.

When I look at the source code in TBird, this is how the headers start
out--the first line is the Return-path.
Return-path: (e-mail address removed)
Envelope-to: (e-mail address removed)
Delivery-date: Wed, 09 Jan 2008 07:30:55 -0600
Received: from pool-72-94-139-96.phlapa.east.verizon.net ([72.94.139.96]
helo=[10.1.1.198])

I'm the administrator of my mail server. I am able to look at the actual
files on the server (I don't have to log in through IMAP to see them, I can
just look at the text files that represent each message. The text file
shows the same thing as TBird.

WinMail is changing the headers before viewing them.

I don't know why WinMail would be changing the headers for you
but not for anyone else. :-)
The only way to isolate this problem is to route some test emails
through a different incoming mail server.
If you think your WinMail is corrupted, another option would be
to install Windows Live Mail and give it a try. I use both, but
prefer Windows Live Mail.

I first noticed OE6 doing this on my old XP machine. Since I use TBird, I
haven't been all that concerned with it. But I WOULD like to get it fixed.

Thanks.

Turn off email scanning in any program that is scanning email. I don't
believe WinMail is doing that.

Good luck. Like Frank says, it could be your antivirus corrupting
the message download in Windows Mail.
