email mail merge

I have a spreadsheet in Excel populated with about 500,000 email addresses.
How would I go about doing a mail merge with Outlook or is there something
else more suitable for the job?

You can Mail Merge xls-files from within Word; Tools-> Letters and Mailings

It's going to be slow going - you might want to try a mail merge app
specifically made to handle huge quantities of messages.
