Email items in the journal

When I move an email to the journal, I cannot open that item in the journal,
if I have deleted it from the in box. Do I have to save the email message in
both places? I'd rather delete it from the inbox, and keep it in the journal
to save space.

I don't use Journal, but AFAIK it doesn't hold the actual data - just links.
Journal uses up a lot of space, if I remember right.
