Email aliases in Active Directory + native mode

Bill O'Connell

Hello,

I have a Windows 2000 Domain with my users email addresses
in Active Directory. I am not currently running Exchange,
although we may be going to it within 6 months.
I'm putting in an Anti-Spam server that speaks LDAP and
pulls the email addresses from Active Directory.

The problem is each of our users have 3 valid email
aliases in our sendmail server. Is there some way to give
users multiple addresses in Active Directory?

Also a side question, will moving to native mode affect
authentication on Windows NT workstations? All of my DC's
are Win 2000.

Thanks,

Bill

Hi Bill,

Yes users can have multiple email addresses - one will be the primary email
address, the others will be aliases.

For example, you might have a user Jane Bloggs who gets married and changes
her name to Jane Smith. You can setup her account (within Active Directory
there is a tab called Email Addresses and you can click on "New", then "smtp
address" and add in the new email alias....I'M NOT IN FRONT OF AD AT THE
MOMENT SO I MIGHT BE A BIT OFF WITH SOME OF THE LABELS) to now have
(e-mail address removed) as the primary email address, but (e-mail address removed)
as an alias. She will then receive all emails sent to her bloggs address,
but her replies will come from her smith account. HTH

Native mode only affects Domain Controllers, not clients so there shouldn't
be any problems with switching to native mode AFAIK.

Cheers,
Katherine
