HELP. I used to insert the em dash by holding the alt key and pressing 0151. For some reason, when I try it now, a blank square box like this â–º is displayed. The funny thing is that the alt+0151 works in powerpoint. Please help, I don't understand what is wrong with word.

That shortcut should work in all Windows apps (unless it has been
reassigned), but some other ways of inserting an em dash are:

1. Use the built-in Word shortcut: Alt+Ctrl+Num - (where Num - = the minus
key on the numeric keypad).

2. Assign a new shortcut of your own (I use Ctrl+M).

3. Use the Unicode shortcut (Word 2002 and above): type 2014, then press
Alt+X.

4. Insert the em dash directly from the Insert Symbol dialog or Windows
Character Map.
