eFax program

This subject came out of the Paperless Printer Doo Dad thread and took on a
life of its own.

Here's the deal. . . I have ver 3.0.0.7 of eFax software. It's a virtual
printer that produces PDF like docs but let's the user append / merge docs,
search docs for text, add after-the-fact graphics, hyperlinks (internal /
external), text, sound files, etc. You can also include a self-executing
viewer so you can email a friend a document produced on a program that s/he
might not have. You can also print out to TIFF or JPEG format.

The newest ver (3.1) is adware/ nagware but my older ver is free of all that
stuff. A few people have expressed an interest in getting a copy to
evaluate. I will put it up temporarily on my own site and will email the url
to those interested to avoid excessive demands of my bandwidth. If you are
interested, send me a msg and an email address to (e-mail address removed) (drop
the 'gun' before sending) and I'll forward the address.

Hope this works for everyone. . .

OK, I got it and installed it. It tried to make an outbound
connection at startup.
I initially denied the connections without making any
special rules (using Kerio 2.1.5).
Several seconds later it tried to re-establish the
connection. I created rules to deny the connection and got
no more warnings.
There's no ad window in the program. It does what ML said it
does except, as I said, it tries to call out upon starting
the program.
Please keep in mind I only tested it for about 20 minutes.
It's better than the version eFax is now offering which
should be avoided.
I'll be keeping it around for the rare occasions when I can
use it.

Unfortunately, the license does not allow for
redistribution. So, whether ML decides to keep it available
will be up to ML.

I don't see any way from within the program to stop it from
loading with Windows.
So, I don't want to spend any more time with this program.
I've uninstalled it and am done with it.

ML, thanks anyway. :)

Ben,

If you haven't got something like this already, get the free Startup
Control Panel from <http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml>.

I've used e-fax since it came out. I know there is some setting
somewhere to keep it from loading, but I can't ever remember it so I
just use the Startup Control to turn off the autorun after I install a
new version.

Works really well.

E-fax is not really "freeware" since the free account means that you
do get occasional e-mails that you can't turn off. But, I love having
it since I can do emergency scanning by faxing to myself, it's nice to
have a number I can give out where nobody else sees the fax, and I can
keep an electronic record of important faxes I've received.

You don't need an account with them to download and use the program. You're
never asked to set up and account in order to be able to download. I use it
just fine as a standalone app.

I think during the intial setup it attempts to phone home so you can send in
your account details. I just cancelled that process and it's never bothered
me again.

Go to Startup group and simply delete the Live Menu and Tray menu icons and
the program won't start up with Windows.

Another nice way to use this program is as a quick'n'dirty slideshow. Print
a graphic from Irfanview, using the efax printer. You can now add text to
the image, graphics, your own recorded soundtrack, etc. Save it as a
self-executing file and send it to friends, family, etc.
