editing html created in word-2k3 with word-97

I have a mixed environment of word97 and word2003 workstations. If I create
a document with hyperlinks in word2003 and save it as an html document and
then try to open the document for editing with word97, I see all the html
code rather than just the human readable hyperlink. This does not happen
going from word97 to word97 or word97 to word2003. Is there a setting in
word2003 that will save the file in a format compatible with word97?

Tools/OPtions/Save, the dropdown list for disabling features. Not sure how this
will affect inserting hyperlinks, though. The Internet stuff was all rather new
when Word 97 was introduced, and I believe that version didn't have Hyperlink
fields.

Hi Dave,

To add to Cindy's reply. Word has been able to create
some form of HTML document since Word v6 (1993), but
it was rather limited until Word 2000's introduction
of 'round trip' documents, i.e. one's that could go
from .DOC to .HTML and back to .DOC without loss of
any original content.

The HTML produced by Word 200x series versions, even
when using File=>Save As=>Web Page-Filtered, exceeds the
capabilities of the Web Authoring Tool of Word 97 to
understand the HTML/XHTML/XML content use, while on
the other hand Word 97 had a couple of web page features
that didn't move forward after that version.

You can try turning on [x] Confirm conversions at open
in Tools=>Options=>General and when you use File=>Open
for the HTML file choose HTML file from the dialog
box that should come up, but basically you'll have a
better chance of success by using the .DOC file format
for backward compatability.
