absolutely agree with echo here. the ppt files do indeed
get very large. the best advice is always use the image
software for what they were created for.
before you insert the graphic png into powerpoint. do all
your "edits" in fireworks, photoshop, or paintshop pro,
then save the graphic and import the saved graphic into
powerpoint.
ps. dont forget to reduce the overall size of your ppt
make sure your reduce the resolution of your png file to
72dpi (screen resolution). believe me the difference will
help tremendously when it comes to opening and / or
distributing your presentation.

This is by design.
You can sometimes Copy/Paste (or drag and drop) the image
directly from an image editor into PPT and have what's
called an OLE-Server established. Basically, that allows
you to edit the image in the original program from within
PPT. Sounds like that's what you want -- but be aware that
it can create very large PPT files.
I'm not positive this works with Fireworks, though.
