Elmira,
I've used a freeware prog called Rad Video Tools to convert MOV to AVI.
Homepage:
http://www.radgametools.com/
How to:
http://www.videohelp.com/mov2avi.htm
I've also used the add-on for TMPGenc already mentioned. Both qork
quite well. I'd probably opt for the latter, but the full version of
TMPGenc is $hareware. Depends on what you want to do with your files &
how sophisticated/complex your needs are.
And, of course, it'll depend on your OS.
I'd have a look-see around the above-mentioned videohelp.com or
afterdawn.com & see what suits your needs/expertise level, etc. &
what's available for free or trial/shareware.
Obviously, the best solution would be to edit your MOV files as is,
without having to convert to AVI or other format. Conversion,
naturally, introduces problems into the mix & MAY be totally
unnecessary for your needs.
Finally, consider what your final output will be: if you want to burn
it to say, CD-SVCD,DVD then you'll need good conversion software to get
it into burning-ready format. A simple solution for this is the
formerly freeware, now shareware, product DivXToDVD --which supports
more than just DiVX. Here's the site's blurb on the shareware version:
"DivXToDVD is a 1 click solution to convert your movie files to a
compatible DVD playable on your home DVD player. DivxToDVD supports
most popular format such DivX, Xvid, MOV, VOB, Mpeg, Mpeg4, AVI, WMV,
DV and stream formats. It converts your single files into a compliant
DVD Video set of files and burns it on a DVD blank media DVD+-R(W). The
aspect ratio can be automatically selected or forced to a specific
format. The program works for NTSC and PAL video format and create
automatically chapters. Multiple audio tracks are supported. The future
version will create automatically DVD menu and Subtitles."

I've used the freeware version for some time now & am VERY happy with
it. Sorry, don't know what improvements/enhancements there are in the
SW version.
Last freeware vers is linked at VSO's site, taking you to download.com
Here's that link:
VSO DivXtoDVD Converter 0.5.2
http://www.download.com/VSO-DivXtoDVD-Converter/3000-7970_4-10376028.html?tag=lst-0-1
FYI, current SW vers is VSO DivxToDVD 2 vers 1.99.13
The last freew vers came out within the last few months, I believe, so
I really don't think it's too far behind the latest SW vers.
Hope this helps!
Good luck!
