Is there any way to delete an item in the msconfig "Startup" group? A folder
(Protect) and file (protect) somehow got added to that list, causing it of
course to open on my desktop with every boot. I removed the checkmark from
the box in front of that line -- which means I now get the msconfig "warning
message" with every boot.

In that warning message there should be a box to "not show me this again".
Check it.

Delete the offensive entry from the startup section of the registry.
