Echo in Messenger

Raven

Hi all,

I use Messenger often, have WinXP Home, and the case is
that I must use Messenger in audio conversations using
the headphones as if I use the speakers, a horrible echo
and feedback occurs.

I have runned the audio tunning wizard several times,
unchecked the "I am using headphones" option, with no
sucess...Any ideas please on how to be able to hear the
other party while in a conversation, through the
speakers, without echoes or feedback?

Thank you all!

Many many folks are accomplishing this, just make sure that your mic is not
pointed and/or too near the speakers. I have been doing this for over 6
years with Messenger and NetMeeting.

I have the same problem, moving the mic/speakers solves nothing. We want to use our webcam with three of us in the room so headsets are no good. Anyone else with a suggestion. I have tried almost everything, even returned my computer over this

Hi

Also, to add, a headset or simply using headphones will stop this

Raven,
Is the party on the other end using an open microphone? Headset
usually work better. Open microphones will feed back (echo) if the
are too loud or too near the recipients' speakers. Headsets on bot
ends and lower volume should cure the problem

There is another way to get the echo in Messenger - even if both parties are listening through headsets!

Under volume controls, recording options, if the recording input is on mono or stereo mix, everything will work except there will be echo. If the input is selected as mic input, then everything will work except there won't be any echo - if both parties use headsets.

With the recording input set to stereo mix, for example, the PC picks the mic AND the sound being played (i.e. the other persons sound signal) and sends them both on your outgoing audio channel. This pics up your mic, adds the other persons audio signal, and loops the sum back to them - enabling the sound to go around and around.

This loop is entirely within the PC. You could bury your speakers under 20 feet of concrete and it would still loop back within the PC. Arrrgh!
