Easy Question: Printer Permission

J

JOHN MCCARTHY

I've shared my printers on my Windows 2000 printer but I
want only certain people to view them. Under the
permission tab it allows me to Share or Not Share and
List. I've selected Share and Not to List. Under
Permission I took the "Everyone" and removed any rights to
the printer and the group is gone.

Users can still see the printer. Does anyone know how I
can limit who can see what printers on the server are
shared?

A million thanks!

Being able to "see" (as in shows in Windows Explorer) and being able to use
are two different things.

With Windows Networking, all shares (except "hidden" ones - see below) show
up in Windows Explorer whether or not the user has permission to use it.
This applies to printer and folder shares.

The "List in Directory" check box has to do with having the printer "listed"
in Active Directory, not the Windows Explorer browse list.

A share can be made "hidden" by adding $ to the end of its name (e.g. px$).
Then, it never shows up in Windows Explorer for anyone.
