Eachtime I open Outlook - "Outlook did not shut down properly"

I am having trouble! Each time I start up Microsoft outlook after shutting
the computer down, a message appears something like "Personal Folders did not
shut down properly, Outlook is checking for errors" - which takes about 2
minutes each time I open to do this and is frustrating!
Please help :)

hi Michelle,

If you turn off MS Outlook before shutting down windows this problem should
not occur. However if you can't open your Personal Folders file (.pst) or
your Offline Folder file (.ost) ,or you suspect that your .pst or .ost data
file is corrupt, you can use the Inbox Repair tool (Scanpst.exe) to diagnose
and repair errors in the file. The Inbox Repair tool scans only the .pst or
..ost file, making sure that the file structure is intact. It doesn't scan
your mailbox on the Microsoft Exchange Server. The Inbox Repair tool will
reset your file structure and rebuild headers.

The Inbox Repair tool works on both the Microsoft Outlook 97-2002 Personal
Folders File (.pst) and the Outlook Personal Folders File (.pst) data files.

Scanpst.exe is installed when you install Microsoft Outlook and is located at:

drive:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\LocaleID folder - where
LocaleID is the locale identifier (LCID) for the installation of Microsoft
Office. The LCID for English - United States is 1033.

I get the same message and have gone through many different "fixes". I
always shut down Outlook before shutting down windows and my computer. I
have run scanpst and find no errors. I have even created a new pst file and
imported the data from the old one. Not sure what else to do. Our support
staff has no more help to offer on this problem.

hi,

After running scanpst.exe on the file, the file may need to be compacted.
PST files get fragmented like a hard drive does after files have been moved
into and out of the PST. COMPACT defrags the file or removes left over empty
space.
If the file is fragmented or has lots of empty space built up in it, the
user very likely will continue to get the message frequently when opening
Outlook until the COMPACT is ran on it to remove the fragmented places or
empty space in the PST file.

To COMPACT a PST, right click the PST file in Outlook, click [advanced] then
COMPACT NOW .

Thanks Haris, however, I have compacted this file so often it must be
tighter than a . . . Well, let's just say very compacted. Still same
message. Still at a loss.

But have you used Task manager to verify it's really closed?

I have not. I am thinking that there is another program that is hanging onto
my pst file and causes this when I close down. Any ideas how to "see" if
this is happening?

After you've closed Outlook, open Task Manager and select the Processes tab.
See if OUTLOOK.EXE still appears. If so, then something is keeping it open
and you can see if anything here helps:
