i am transferring my e mail account to a new computer. It is trying to
download over 4,000 messages. Some are as old as 4 years.

I was using outlook express and am now using windows mail

Outlook Express and Windows Mail are email CLIENTS, not email ACCOUNTS.
What I meant was, are you using something like GMail or Yahoo?

So, isn't that what an email program is supposed to do, download
emails? If that's not what you want, let us know what your desire is,
and which mail provider is involved.
