I would like a message notification on my desktop to alert me to a new
E-mail. Can this be done?I am using windows Vista. Thanks, john

Not with Windows Mail, but you can if you switch to Windows
Live Mail and its companion Windows Live Messenger.

If Windows Mail is running in the background it will place an envelope icon
in the Notification Area when it detects a new mail. It will also play a
customizable sound unless that option is turned off.
