e-mail size problem

How come when I change a picture size from 1024x768 to 160x160 to e-mail it,
{microsoft office 2003} Then I try to change it back it is distorted. It was
a picture of my son I was using for a desktop background.

It's like pouring the contents of a 8oz glass of milk into a 4oz glass
and then wanting to pour it back into another 8oz glass and fill the glass.
You can't do it. You lost 4oz. In your case you lost almost 97% of the
data and you can't get it back. You also changed it to a square.
