I have a couple customers that are small companies. Some
of the workers are getting e-mails sent from other workers
that didn't send the e-mail. Internally fake e-mails are
being sent to each other and neither one of them sent some
of these e-mails. What could be the cause of this?

Email addresses are being harvested from virus infected computers and
substituted for return addresses on spam/virus email being sent out.

A virus or worm infection, malware, trojan take your pick

Are all machines running AV if not then try stinger from NAI to check for
the top threats at

www.nai.com

Ensure that they all have the latest service packs and hotfixes as required.

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

or check for software such as AV etc at

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/catalog/
copy your patches and removal tools onto cd for the machines and then remove
them from the network and patch them and scan them all 1 at a time.

then perhaps visit an on line scan site to scan for all threats such as
housecall from trend or the NAI site
