E-mail attachments

I am aware that outlook has for sometime blocked suspicious attachments,
since the last patches even our internal .doc attachments have been blocked.
Any ideas anyone, we have exhausted our knowledge.

Are they blocked completely like exe's are or are you forced to save them
first? Are only doc extensions affected or other file types too?
