e-mail attachments

Since upgrading to XP I can no longer send e-mail with an attachment - such as a picture - even one as small as 60KB.
Since I'm getting timeout messages from the server it has been suggested to me that it is a virus protector looking at outgoing mail that is causing the problem. Any suggestions.?
 
Post the complete error.

Disable email scanning of outgoing and incoming mail. It provides no
additional protection:
