however i have read and deleated these e-mails but the alert remains despite
my inbox and other folders being empty. does anyone no how i can remedy this
without using system restore? thanks

I am not even sure of which email program you are using, but a newsgroup
specific to that program might be more help.

please disregard , problem solved
To remove an account or to change the count manually:

Start>Run>Regedit>navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\[Your
E-Mail Address]. In the right pane modify: Message Count, Change it to 0.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail. In
the right pane modify: MessageExpiryDays Change it to 0.

You can also do this with TweakUI. That has a feature to either reset or
remove the display of email on the Welcome screen. Get TweakUI from here.

This is a known issue in XP with a known fix. See the OP's second post
about the KB article that describes it and my post about using TweakUI.
