DVDSIG does it work at all under Win98?

Hello all. Sorry I've been away so long. Just couldn't keep up with
the increased postings.

I had occasion to look for a password utility in Pricelessware
recently, and I also met someone who does some high test PC work but
hadn't heard of Pricelessware. So I decided to look for and download
the latest CD. It took me about five hours with Star Downloader, and I
managed to verify the ISO checksum and burn the CD. But when it came
to using DVDSIG to verify the CD contents, I got nowhere.

I'm running Win98SE, so I read the little note about problems and the
three error messages. I couldn't even get all of those error messages.
For me, following the instructions on the download page exactly,
DVDSIG said only:

the system cannot find the file specified. dvdsig.md5

I also tried copying DVDSIG.exe to my desktop, and then dragging the
Pl2006 CD icon onto it. That didn't work either.

I then went to the author's website, looking for a contact address or
form, but failed there too.

So I'm stumped. How DOES one use DVDSIG to check a CD or DVD under
Windows 98?

Hi Achim,

FWIW that check isn't needed if you download the file and verify the
checksum. Dvdsig is an alternate way to verify a copy of the CD if you
request one by snail mail rather than downloading.
I'm running Win98SE, so I read the little note about problems and the

It's in the root directory of the CD - right next to dvdsig.exe
I also tried copying DVDSIG.exe to my desktop, and then dragging the
Pl2006 CD icon onto it. That didn't work either.

No surprise there. ;)

I'm not running Win98 now but did when I created the PL2004 CD and
dvdsig worked fine then - has worked for others who use Win98 for the
PL2006 CD (that's how we discovered the 3 file errors).

In Explorer navigate to dvdsig.exe in the root directory of the PL2006
CD and start it up. Choose "verify" - the program should start.

The results will be slightly off for Win98 - as noted on the PL page:
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2006/2006PL-CD-about.php#KnownErrors

dunno what else to tell you. . .

Hi Susan. Thanks for the handholding. Glad to see you're still minding
the CD project, and congratulations to you and the gang for keeping it
going.

I'm going to provide a master copy to the local public library and
wanted to make sure that DVDSIG worked for people who burn a copy of
the CD.
My bad! I now realize I goofed by running DVDSIG from its location in
the "D" folder instead of in the ROOT directory. When I ran it from
the root directory just now, it performed as described (ie. giving the
three "missing file" errors, but verifying the other 311 programs.)

(BTW - over the years, I've had more trouble running checksum programs
than any other class of software. I had to get md5summer from the
pricelessware.com to check the ISO, because I couldn't get any of the
three md5 utilities on my system to work).

Yep, worked fine for me too in '04.

I'm still running IE 5.01 (bought a copy of Win2000 a year ago, and am
still "gearing up" for the upgrade from Win98SE!!) and it gives me
lots of "page not found" errors when trying to navigate PL2006 in WEB
mode. But presumably only dinosaurs with high frustration threshholds
will still be using software this old. Otherwise, I'd suggest
including a disk label to write or paste on the CD saying something
like:

"If all else fails, look in the FILES folder for the programs."

DVDSig is simple and for Win32 ALL, or WINE.

Start it, hold [Ctrl], select [Verify], then dvdsig file and location.

I'm an expert in "if there's a way to go wrong I'll find it". :) Glad
you got things sorted out.

It's not just version 5.01. . . IE is soooooooooooooo frustrating. . .
my bit of advice is here:

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2006/2006PL-CD-about.php#KnownErrors

"The easiest way to avoid these Internet Explorer problems is to use
another browser (ANY other browser)." ;)

Thanks for your suggestion,

I tried it just now, selecting the FILES folder on PL2006, and got an
unbroken sequence of lines saying:

"system cannot read from the specified device. files\1\xxx.xxx"

I then read the "info" page, and tried again, by simply starting
DVDSIG in the CD root directory and hitting "verify" as the
instructions seem to suggest.

That gave the same "system cannot read..." output, except starting in
the root directory.

Not a big issue for me, as I verified the ISO md5, but to my mind the
documentation is as clear as mud.

So I found out when I was showing the librarian how to navigate the
PL2006 CD. I figured it would be a piece of cake on her XP system, but
it was worse than on my 98/IE5! Whenever she clicked on a link, the
page displayed all the html codes. She figured I'd screwed up the CD
and wanted to go online to the site instead...

Thanks, but again, I'm used to banging my head against the wall until
one or the other breaks, but some of the people who would benefit most
from this CD are more apt to be initimidated and give up on it.

Yes, and I hang my head in shame (I'm going to switch soon, promise!).
But you forget that there's a whole world of people out there using
PCs every day who hardly know what a browser is, let alone how to
switch from the one they got with their machine.

Damnitall, should have run dvdsig before burn..sod it.

The readme says to verify copy the app and get a new md5 to check the app,
but its the wrong md5 sig, and wronger if patched with certain burners,
now, if a fake cd had a fake dvdsig..what would it say? :)
And what would the faked documents say about verifying ?

Probably better to just leave the sig tool out of the cd and document
the users to download something that points to cd and checks it.
[ which dvdsig won't do because the path is wrong ]

If you don't mention it they won't even be aware of the small possibility
they should
maybe consider looking in the direction of being somewhat afeared,
mention it and you will be layering corrections until the earth evaporates,
successful software houses provide at least one good lesson in life.
Fake it baby, they won't even know. :)

<q>
If you must use IE a patch is available for the Pricelessware CD. The
patch includes revised web pages that use .htm file extentions for all
local links. In addition the error on the Cumulative Pricelessware List
web page has been corrected. To apply the patch download this file:
2006-CD-IE_pages.zip (182 KB). Unzip the file. Copy the PL2006 CD to
your hard drive. Replace the "index.html" file (it's in the "root"
directory); add the other files to their matching 2006 or acf
directories. Files with a .php file extension may be kept or deleted.
Burn a new CD (if desired).

The online dvdsig.md5 file located here:
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2006/dvdsig.md5
*is* the correct one for the PL2006 CD - I just ran the check again to
be sure. . .
Probably better to just leave the sig tool out of the cd and document

erm. . . perhaps you mis-read the directions for verification.

_If patched_ the md5 no longer accurately corresponds to the disk files
and may give further errors if the burner app has mangled the filenames.

erm. . . perhaps you mis-read the directions for verification.

if the cd was patched for xpsp2
if no new md5 they will get an error on first verify
';' is invalid in an ISO cd filename although extensions allow it, nero
( depending on settings )
will change ';' to '_' this is the same reason for win98 difference

The system cannot find the path specified.
files\I\Info-RapidSearch&amp;Replace\sr.exe
The system cannot find the path specified.
files\S\SpybotSearch&amp;Destroy\spybotsd14.exe
The system cannot find the path specified.

The data is invalid. index.html
Total:314 OK:310 Bad:1 Missing:3
The operation completed successfully. 311 files, 629MB, 155s

if a new md5 has been generated for the patch , and another for a patched
and mangled/corrected
pathname they will get an error on hd/web double check
[ or the patcher could edit the readme / patch have updated readme]

There will be patches or corrections, differences cause concern that has
only
a very small chance of being significant , and probably beyond your control.

Very true. The dvdsig.md5 file on the Pricelessware site is for the
original PL2006 CD. ANY change will be detected when you validate the CD
- the IE patch is a change. . .
