DVDRW and CDRW not recognized Code 41

Sue

I recently installed a new DVDRW and now neither my new
DVDRW or my previously installed CDRW show up. When I
reboot it tells me that it has found new hardware for
both, but when I check my device manager they show up
with yellow !. I have deleted them from the device
manager and try to restart but the same thing happens.

Also now when I restart it gives me a booting error that
the primary drive cannot be found and asked me if I want
to press F2 for setup or F1 to continue. I don't know if
the two problems are related but, I didn't get this error
until I installed the new DVD RW.

Goto http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problems
See the second "problem" (read the caveats)
Run the provided registry patch

That should fix your problem (basically, a filter driver is missing or
non-operational, the registry patch will delete the filter drivers
references for your cdrom(s))

Basically, the reg file from above carries out the steps displayed at this
website

CD-ROM Drive or DVD-ROM Drive Missing After You Install Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320553

CD-ROM Access Is Missing and Messages Cite Error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19,
or Code 39 After You Remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314060

(It'll fix code 41 errors too as per the contents of the last kb article)

I also have lost both my CD ROM and Burner---I went to
the site Jason mentioned and did what it said to the
registry, but then I couldn't access the drives in Device
Mgr to delete them and re-install them, as they didn't
show up. If there is a fix I could use it also. Thank
you so much.

I found a solution to a smilar issue on the dell web site
which suggested I remove some specific registery values
that hang out after removing roxio software

this fixed the issue
