DVD Upgrade

Folks:

I have a Dell desktop computer & a Toshiba LapTop.

My Dell desktop has a Optical DVD-ROM (OptiPlex - GX620)
The LapTop has a regular DVD -R/RW player.

I have some DVD disks and only the Optical DVD-ROM can read/play the content
of these DVD disks. The LapTop does not even know that the DVD disks are
already formatted. It
wants to format them - YES or NO.

* Is there a way for me to UPGRADE the DVD player on the LapTop (with
software, perhaps) so that it will recognize/play my DVD disks just like
the DVD-ROM on the Dell
desktop is able to do ?

* Or do I have to replace the current DVD -R/RW (on the LapTop) with
an optical drive ?

Thanks,
Jo.

Is the problem only with some particular DVDs? Are they manufactured or are
they recorded?

If the disks are +R and your laptop only handles -R, this may be the
problem.
See: http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html#4.3.1 for more explanation.

(note: both your Dell's DVD-ROM and the Toshiba's DVD-RW are optical
devices, as are your CD drives....)

Yes, there may be a firmware update for your laptop's drive, but you should
have someone with experience assist - otherwise you could render the drive
unusable.
