DVD to Avi or Mpeg

I have quite a few DVDs and would like to make files of them so that I
can save "wear and tear" on the drive unit as my HDD is quite big.
Anyone recommend a no-nonsense, easy-to-use program (preferably with a
wizard interface/step-by-step guide) that will allow me to copy my own
DVDs?

Is that really necessary?
Anyway, if HD space doesn't matter you can make an ISO image of your DVD
and then mount that with Daemon Tools. This way you can play your DVD as if
it were in your DVD drive.

Can you explain how I would make an ISO image of the DVD? What tools do
I need? I have Nero which has Nero Image Drive. Can I use that?
Thanks

If I make the DVD into an AVI it will be a lot smaller than making an
ISO image won't it? I think I would prefer having my DVD being about 1GB
file size instead of around 5GB.

Yes, people compress a DVD into a 700 MB avi file. It does mean loss of
(some) quality and DVD extras and menus. It's your call.
To answer your other question: perhaps it can be done with Nero, if not
it can be done with DVD Decrypter. I haven't yet needed to do it, so I
can't tell much about it.
