DVD seen as CD-R

I updated XP Home on a laptop SP2 a while ago. Now, on a 10 week trip
around SE Asia I've discovered that my external Pioneer DVD burner is
seen as a CD-R . I should have checked before I left because on my
desktop machine at home both the CD & DVD burners were seen as CD-R's
after installing SP2. I didn't have time to sort it out before I left
but I gather that there is a registry key which determines whether a
drive is seen as recordable. Can someone point me to the relevamt
keys? Also is there a key that specifies that a drive is a CD or a
DVD?

Thanks,

David

make sure you are inserting a blank. a friend recently discovered, inserting a previousely recorded disc changed the drive type.

Sorry about the delay in getting back, more problems. Can't find my
post in Forte Agent, don't know why, and the local pages of Google
were in Indonesian and I couldn't get the English version. Anyway, yes
the disks are new. The burn stops with no warning at 33% and the disks
do seem to be burned about 1/3 of the way through.

I have a load of MiniDV tape to burn to disk. Still no progress. Any
one have any other suggestions?
