I run DVD-RW on my computer occasionally without a
problem however when I record onto a DVD-RW disc with my
recordable DVD recorder the DVD drive does not read the
disc when I insert it into my computer. Are there setting
changes I can make to fix this or should I use a
different type of disc?

Does it work OK with plain R discs? If so it may just be the make of disc,
or it could be the way it writes to the rw which makes it unplayable in the
pc. What make of recorder is it?
