DVD-RW Stomp backup reboots system

Have Pioneer DVD-RW 104 firmware 4. Stomp backup my pc
worked for a while but now Stomp 4.85 and later Stomp 5
that I tried when failure began do not usually work. When
backup starts preparing files I get a Windows Generic 32
failure--typical error report is listed below--something
about VSS calling a copy that fails--usually my system
then reboots. Occasionally about 1 in 10 times after the
message the backup goes ahead. Increasingly it doesn't.
System claims drive works fine. Norton claims no virus. I
have windows xp with service pack 1 and all updates. I
tried to do a copy to DVD-RW using windows and it claimed
it did not recognize the disk as a windows one. This has
been going on for a week.
