DVD RW Sony DW-U18A OEM

Just got the above DVD RW. Does everything except burn DVDs. I've tried a Nero (Demo) and it tells me that it 'cannot write-to-disc at once to an open CD???'. I'm using the DVD tab of course. I don't think I've got a dud, but I'm keen to get advice if you can help. Do I need some firmware and if so where do it get that from? Been on the Sonystorage site and can't see my DVD RW listed.
Someone help me!!!

I fail to see what you're doing posting here! You have a Sony DVD burner,
and you're using an Ahead burning application which is causing problems.
Where does Microsoft come into it? Sony won't support you because the burner
is OEM, meaning all support must come from wherever it is you bought it.
Yes, you're running XP, but the issue is with Nero.

Please address your issue to the appropriate place.

Thanks for your approach here!
From other responses at other 'appropriate places' it's apparent that XP doesn't support DVDs (Yet!!!) To explain further, I've used both Roxio and Nero (prefer the look of Nero) and neither recognise the DVD. I was thinking, without saying it, that my XP drivers were not seeing my DVD RW. XP calls my DVD rw a CDr in the property box, so I was of the mindset that I'm missing some critical drivers/firmware etc.

I'd appreciate some feedback from others too....

Allan, XP doesn't support DVD burning natively, but it will if theird
party software like either Roxio or Nero is installed. I use Roxio Easy
Media Creator 6 to write DVD-R/RW/RAM. Sorry I can't help you as to why
your system is not working.

Well that's funny...because I burnt three DVDs with Nero only this morning!
The native burning applet doesn't support DVD burning. Third party
applications certainly do! Hell, I can burn to DVDs using Nero under 98!

Like I said, this is a problem with Nero.

I have a Plextor 708A and it's correctly identified and was straight out of
the box.

Check at Nero's site to make sure that your DVD is among models
supported in the version of Nero you have,

Then when you try, and choose from the various DVD formats on the left
when you take New and DVD in the top drop down, just which option are
you taking? and what actions after that? Nero is very flexible, but
that does mean it is easy to get on the wrong track

Alex,
Thanks a lot for your guidance. Don't know what I was doing wrong exactly , but I'm working now. I've burnt my first back up around 4.3GB of pictures and I'm ready to try a DVD of my summer hols!! (Nero vision express??!!)
Thanks for taking the time to get back to me... much appreciated!
