DVD RW problems

Does anyone have a solution for a problem I'm experiencing with my DVD RW drive. It will read all types of CD / DVD media, but will not write to DVD +R or +RW media. I know the drive is OK as I've tested it in a friend's machine. I have also installed another DVD RW drive and this does exactly the same. When a blank DVD disc is inserted the icon in my computer changes to say CD drive.

DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW are two types of recordable DVDs. Not all drives
support writing to both types. I would check your computer documentation to
verify drive capability.

I'm using Nero Express 6. But it does not recognise a blank DVD disc. If I insert a blank DVD disc it reports it as being a CD-R. The problem must relate to my OS configuration (XP)
