DVD RW Problem X 2

I have a TDK internal DVD RW and a Memorex external DVD RW installed on my
system. Clicking on My System, both drives are recognized as DVD RW drives
when empty. The problem starts when a blank DVD R is inserted. Same problem
with both drives. As soon as a blank disc is inserted, both drives suddenly
become cd drives without the DVD banner. Clicking on either drive and then
clicking Properties shows the disc with no free space and 0 bytes of stored
data. Double clicking on either drive in Windows Explorer gives a popup
"Drive not Accsessible, Incorrect Function". The discs are brand new DVD+ R
as called out for the drives. Tried several different brands with the same
result. Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both drives with no change.
Both drives worked fine as DVD writers 3 weeks ago, and the external drive
is less than 3 months old, the internal is maybe a year old. Neither drive
has been used that much, so I don't think the drives are bad, they play DVDs
fine. Any HELP APPRECIATED!!!!!!
I'm at my wits end with this! Thanks!
Don

If you insert a blank disc in the player, it doesn't yet know what that
blank disc is to become. And as there's no native support for DVD in XP,
Explorer doesn't check the media, but assumes it's an empty CD.

And that "Incorrect Function" is correct, as there's nothing to be read from
a BLANK disc. You can't access it, you have to burn something to it first.

I have exactly the same problem. It is new. Could copy data to DVD but
suddenly got problem when inserting blank disk. Nero will write test disk but
nothing else. Nero says ASPI installation is corrupted. How do you fix it? I
also did system restore at a point two weeks back - that didn't fix the
problem either.

Thomas, correct me if I'm wrong, but in the past, after inserting a blank
disc, the drive designation would change to cd, but a banner would appear
across the icon showing the disc as DVD. Thank You for being willing to
help. As I said in my origional post, All Help gratefully accepted. Don

OK I got mine fixed. Other posts have pointed out that XP does not have a
native burner. I'm using NERO, but there are some good free burners out
there. NERO tools indicated that my ASPI was broken. There is a website,
http://radified.com/ASPI/forceaspi.htm
that has an aspi fixer and a testor. I used it and have my DVD working
again. Not all burners Use ASPI, but some including nero do.
