DVD-RW drive not recognised

Hi,

I'm running a new PC with latest XP sp2 install with all updates/patches
installed.

My problem is my DVD-RW drive is not displayed/accessible via windows.

The following is my current situation:
1) My DVD-RW drive is correctly detected/recognised in the bios;
2) I can boot into the Windows XP CD with the drive;
3) If I boot XP in safe mode the drive is recognised and is usable.

The DVD-RW drive worked fine for past 6 months in my previous PC. Given 1)
2) and 3) above I am pretty sure this is a software error and not a hardware
fault.

I have looked through various forums, most point to the 'upper/lower filter'
reg. fix which I have run - this has made no difference. I have no CD
burning installed except for Windows Media Player 11 and latest iTunes..

I have been into device manager and tried scanning for hardware changes, I
have tried uninstalling and re-installing the IDE drivers (both had no
affect). I can plug in a USB CD-ROM this works fine.

Any ideas on the solution to this frustrating problem?

KR,

Neil.

Perhaps changing the drive letter in Disk Management, OR loading TweakUI
from Microsoft downloads and UNhiding the assigned drive letter will
solve the puzzle.

Chaning the drive letter (when in safe mode) had no effect as when I rebooted
the drive wasn't there. TweakUI is not installed - no drives are being
hidden.

Thx for the response... :)

Let me rephrase it.
Change the drive letter in Disk Management( not Safe Mode), OR go to
Microsoft Downloads GET TweakUI load it and UNhide the assigned drive
letter will likely solve the puzzle.

As I said when the computer is booted normally, there is no DVD-RW drive to
change, just the main hard drive (c:). Only when in safe mode does the
DVD-RW drive appear.

I have now installed TweakUI: no drives were/are being hidden. Still no
DVD-RW drive... :(

Any more ideas?

Does the drive show up in Device Manager at all (ie. the hardware is
there but no drive letter assigned)?

No. Only when booted in safe mode does the drive appear - then it functions
perfectly normally.

The drive works in safe mode, ok.. In normal mode the drive is not seen in
device manager, disk management or my computer, right..?
You have used the upper and lower registry fix from the site below, right..?
http://kgiii.info/windows/XP/general/missing_CD-DVD_drives.html

What IDE channel is the optical drive connected to, primary or secondary..?
Also, is the HDD (assuming you have one HDD, on the primary IDE channel.?)
jumper set to master or computer select, and the optical drive is set to,
which setting CS (computer select), M (master), or S (slave)..?

Look in device manager, under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, secondary IDE
channel, is it showing as enabled in the device usage box..?

You say the drive is seen in the BIOS, is it set to auto detect, I assume it
is..?

Have you tried..?
To reinstall the MS generic cdrom drivers..
In my computer, tools, folder options, view tab, in advanced settings,
you'll need to first mark "show hidden files and folders", then uncheck the
box for "Hide extensions of known file types".. Now you can go to the
windows\INF folder and find "cdrom.inf" and right click it, select install
from the menu.. Reboot the computer..
Remember to change back to your original settings in folder options..

What is the make and model of the optical drive..?
Have you tried updating the drives firmware..?

Also, in services.msc (type it in the run box) is the IMAPI burning service
set to automatic..?

Post your results
Cheers

Please see Jamons post, it would appear that some software that loads,
is the problem.

Thanks for the posts to-date.

I determined the problem was the ASPI drivers were not loaded/loading (for
reasons unknown.) I installed the adaptec version from their website, which
didn't seem to make any difference.

However, by coincidence my copy of Vista arrived today - installing that
solved the problem. The drive now works perfectly.

Thanks once agin for trying to help. Very much appreciated.
