DVD ROM install seen as CD ROM

I am trying to add an older DVD ROM player to my new system. Windows XP recognizes the new device and even has the model correct. Unfortunately, it sees it as only a CD ROM drive and not a DVD ROM drive therefore does not use the correct drivers. The DVD is a Pioneer DVD-103S which is indicated to be compatible to Windows XP in the catalogue. The end result is that it reads data and audio disks, but ejects DVD disks. I have been unable to over write the selection for drivers - because XP thinks I have a CD ROM drive, it won't let me install the DVD drivers. Any ideas?

1). Make sure your Windows XP is up-to-date with the
latest downloads/upgrades

2). My experience has been that sometimes, a third-party
vendor such as PCFriendly DVD is necessary to allow the
DVD to be played.

Hope this helps
