Hi All
Have also posted this in harware forum as not sure which is more suited to the
problem, sorry if that is a problem.

Hope someone out there can help or point me to another forum that can.

I have recently bought a Sony DVD RW AW-G170A multidrive and am trying to use a
DVD-RAM disc in it. The disc is a cartridge type but I have removed it from
that. The RAM disk type is Panasonic Type4
I am running XP SP2.
It opens up in an empty folder but no matter what i do I can't format it or
eject it once it has been read.
If I try to format it says it is in use by another program but i have no other
programs running.
I have Nero6 and EasyCD Platimun5 installed, not sure if there is a background
program mounting this disc somewhere that I cant see.

Any suggestions on how to rectify this would be much appreciated.
The only way of ejecting at present is just as the machine starts to boot.

Thanks in advance

Steve

Either Nero or EasyCD Platinum is the program behind the error that it's in
use. Is nero's InCD or EasyCD's packet writing module running? Use the
packet writing software in either of those programs to write to it. It
could also be a conflict between those two programs.

Thanks for the reply.

How can I check "Is nero's InCD or EasyCD's packet writing module running?"

Can I switch those modules off to check?

Thanks
Steve

I think I have found the problem!!!
As soon as the DVD-RAM is inserted it is in use by DirectCD!

How can I remove this part of EasyCD Creator without the rest of it?

Thanks
Steve

Not sure if this will help but in Nero Info Tool the following is found to
be insalled for this drive.

I don't know what the file name is for the packet writing modules for either
Roxio's Direct CD or the Nero software, but I would bet one of them if not
both have it installed. [As a side note you don't need both Roxio's program
and Nero. Decide on one or the other and remove the one you don't want.]

To disable the packet writing software open task manager, right click on an
empty area of the taskbar and click on task manager. On the process tab see
what processes are running to identify which ones are the packet writing
ones. If you don't know what one is, search for it using Google,
www.google.com, or look it up on one of these sites. Once you identify it
end the process from task manager by right clicking on the process and
select end process. Also check to see if there is an icon for it in the
notification area or the taskbar - the area to the right by the clock.

I will check the processes running but think I checked it already and didn't
see anything that looked familiar. There is no icon for DirectCD in my
systray/notification tray!

I messed about yesterday and fixed my corrupted system ASPI. I also found
that it was DirectCD causing my problems (part of Roxio). After messing
about with DirectCD settings etc it seems to be working but for how long I
don't know.
Without DirectCD i take it I can't use the DVD-Ram as a drag and drop
system?

Thanks
Steve

No, actually, I believe XP has built in support to use DVD-RAM disks. Nero
should also have a component for that. I think DirectCD is an old version
of Roxio's current offering which is at version 9. I think DirectCD is
version 5. It came with this system 5 years ago. I never liked DirectCD.
I found later versions to be better. I would uninstall it.
