I've never had problems playing DVDs before... but this morning all
of
a sudden I get an error message saying WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER CANNOT
PLAY THE DVD BECAUSE A COMPATIBLE DVD DECODER IS NOT INSTALLED ON THE
COMPUTER. When I try explore the issue more, I'm directed to a place
where I can pay 14.95 or so for a decoder. Any idea what's going on
here?

TIA.

Windows XP doesn't come with a decoder for copy protected movies, etc.
Usually people get around this by having PowerDVD, InterDVD, etc
installed which has the decoder. Most computers have one of them already
installed. Otherwise you can't play DVD copy protected movies. I don't
know any free decoders, since it requires a license.
