Cannot play DVD

Ben Stevenson

I bought a SONY DVD player and had it installed. It play CDs quite OK but
does not play DVDs. I get the message:

"Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because a compatible DVD decoder
is not installed on your computer."

I do believe that I had faithfully installed the drivers and components that
came with the NERO CD that was supplied with the CD/DVD ROM. I had even gone
to the site and installed the updates but I still cannot play DVDs.

I do hope someone can help me here, as I have received a DVD educational
course content that I had paid for and must pursue it to progress thru my
course.
TIA

I do have the Windows Media Player that came together with the XP OS. I have
used it often to watch videos on the Net. My problem is that I cannot play
DVDs. When I try to, WMP comes up with the stated message in my original
post.

The original software as I have stated is the NERO CD that came with the
Player. I have installed it, but I still cannot play DVDs. Or is there
anything on the NERO CD I may not have installed?

You must have a DVD Codec that comes with a program such as PowerDVD5
that comes from Cyberlink. Another program is WinDVD.

Ben,

Check your installation CD. You should have received a DVD Player program
with the CD/DVD drive. My DVD Player was a separate program on the CD. That
program did not install with the CD/DVD creator program. (My programs were
Roxio not Nero.)

If that doesn't work, check with Nero. If that doesn't work, you may have
to purchase a player program (code). The Microsoft web site offers some
third-party programs for purchase.

I do not recommend any of the "free" players offered at places like
"download.com" because they are loaded with adware/spyware.

Hi

Nero is a CD\DVD software program. It may include the Nero Player, but that
is not what you want. You should have received a DVD player - WinDVD or
something similar.

To play a DVD movie you need a codec to decode it. This does not come
with Windows nor with a package like Nero. You have to get one, either
as part of a stand alone DVD player program, or as an add on; eg from
http://www.cineplayer.com/decoder/default.htm?from=
$14.99 IIRC

Ben:

Seems like you've got lots of advice but no solutions. As Alex has
stated in his reply, you'll need codecs in order for WMP to play the
DVD movie. Go to the following URL and download the free codecs and
installer which will allow WMP to play your movies.

http://home.online.no/~msols/

Scroll on down to "DVDPack.msi" and download the file to your desktop.
Double click the file and the proper codecs will be installed in order
for WMP to play DVDs. I use these codecs and they work great.

Regards.
