DVD multi drive unable to read CD

Hi all,

I have an IBM thinkpad T43p with XP pro. The DVD multi drive (with CD/
DVD RW) was working perfectly fine. Since last 1 week or so it is not
able to recognize any CD disk. It identifies those as blank CD and
pops-up all my CD writing softwares asking me to choose one to write
data into that. I tried music cd as well as data CD- same response. It
is recognizing VCD/DVD etc and is able to play the movies.

Any idea of the issue here? I read from one of the MS knowledge base
articles that this may be happening because of some of audio softwares
overwriting the default IMAPI drivers. How do I rectify this problem?
where can i get the default MS IMAPI drivers (is it possible at all).

Any help in this regard is appreciated.

thanks,
Siva

To reinstall the MS generic cdrom drivers..
In my computer, tools, folder options, view tab, in advanced settings,
you'll need to first mark "show hidden files and folders", then uncheck the
box for "Hide extensions of known file types".. Now you can go to the
windows\INF folder and find "cdrom.inf" and right click it, select install
from the menu..
Remember to change back to your original settings in folder options..
Cheers

Hi Jaymon, associated question. MS knowledge base (http://
support.microsoft.com/kb/867717/en-us) says that " The problem occurs
because the IMAPI CD-burning software changes the sub-header bits on
the disc to a format that Microsoft Windows XP cannot read correctly."
Is this (IMAPI) another driver other than "cdrom.inf"? If yes, which
one is that? Also, I followed the steps that you suggested and after
clicking install all that happens is a refresh of the windows explorer
screen. Does it mean installation went thru ok?

thanks,
Siva

Yes, it sounds like what I experienced when I reinstalled the MS generic
drivers, it's like a refresh of the explorer window..
You could try disabling the inbuilt CD burning capabilities by typing
"services.msc" in the run box, disabling the IMAPI CD burning service or set
it to manual, your call..
Remember, doing so should also clear the check box (enable cd recording on
this drive) on the recording tab for the optical drive.. (in the My Computer
Window, right click the optical drive, properties, recording tab)
You can always re-enable this feature if you feel the need to.. (or for
testing)

Might check the Upper & Lower filters for the optical drives..? The easiest
way to check without going into the registry, would be to go to Device
Manager, open DVD/CD-ROM drives, right click one of your optical drives,
select properties from the menu, Details tab, you should see "Device Instance
Id" and a drop down arrow (v), click it, move the mouse pointer down the list
to highlight Device Upper filters and click it, do the same for the Device
Lower filters, Class Upper & Lower filters as well to see and take note of
their contents.. Also, there should be just 4 MS signed drivers in the
Drivers tab, driver details button, driver files details window, may want to
check, your call.. (MS signed drivers: cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, redbook.sys,
storprop.dll)
What other drivers do you see listed..?
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/bott_03september16.mspx
You mention your writing software(s) they may be causing a conflict or
confusing the OS, a listing of the drivers in the filters should verify
possible exclusive lock issues that these drivers may be causing..( to me
anyway)
Post your results..
Cheers
