What does the DRD stand for, Ram Drive...? Look and see what type of disk
your book says you have to use with your DRD Drive.

I am having a similar problem. When I insert a DVD in either of my two DVD burners, they will not play. With no DVD in the drive, windows explorer shows the drive as "DVD-RW (G:) CD Drive". As soon as I put in a DVD, it changes to "CD-Rom(G:) CD Drive" (or something like that). Attempts to play the movie with WinDVD or Windows Media Player give the message "Please insert disc into drive G:". Of note is that the drives can be used to burn DVDs and the DVDs so burned play just find in other DVD players. It's like the system thinks the inserted DVD disk is actually a CD, not a DVD, or that the DVD drive is a CD drive

I've tried updating drivers with no success. If I uninstall the driver and then reinstall, sometimes the drive will work for a while, then it quits again

MANY people are posting on the issue of their DVD Rom or DVD burner not reading DVDs. The symptoms are the the DVD does not autoplay and attempts to get it to play usually result in a message "please insert disc into drive X:" even though the disc is inserted.

After a lot of web searching, I've discovered a workaround that works consistently. Boot the machine with a DVD in the DVD Rom or DVD burner. For that boot, the DVD drive will work normally. Boot without a DVD in the drive and the drive will not read DVDs.

This is a workaround only. I still want a fix.

This looks like a bug in the DVD drivers or the OS, more likely the OS since I've used two different drivers without any affect.

Another possibility is that there is something left over in the registry after removing some software or hardware that causes this problem. I recently changed my motherboard from a SOYO dragon lite to an ASUS A7N8X-E. At about the same time, I removed my CD-RW and replaced with a second DVD-RW.

Anybody out there have any better ideas on a real fix for this problem.

There are firmwares for various DVDW+Rs especially for Sonys. Check on sony's site to see if your DVD has one.

LG DRD 8160 B is just the product ID code from the
manufacturer. It is a DVD-ROM drive.
