dvd drives not recognized by windows

My windows xp can not find my DVD drives even though they show up on the boot -up screen. I get an error message that the drivers are loaded but the devices can not be found. The drives are both set up as slaves with hard drives as masters on the ide system. The hard drives work fine. It seems very unlikely that both ide cables would become loose or defective at the same time. Any help appreciate
