DVD Drive

Hi all, looking for some advice or comments.

System is Athlon 2000+XP, 256MB RAM, Windows XP Pro SP2 IDE2 set to auto
detect.

I did have a BenQ 5224W CD-RW and a LG GDR8162B DVD-ROM connected to the
Secondary IDE as Master & Slave respectively.

Replaced the BenQ with a Sony DW-Q28A DVD-RW (as Master) and the system
locks up - wont boot, wont even get to POST , blank screen, etc. Swap
drives over (Sony as Slave, LG as Master) and same problem.

Replace LG with the BenQ and also same problem regardless of which is slave.
Sony DVD-RW works fine alone. Only current solution I have found is running
the LG DVD-ROM as slave on Primary IDE and the Sony DVD-RW as Master on
Secondary IDE, but obviously this now limits my future options if I want to
add another HDD..

Is there any known reason why the Sony will not function at all when
connected to the same IDE as another drive? Is there a solution to this?

TIA

Double check the jumpers on the back of the drives - could be as simple as
both being set to master. I know you said you have made them master and
slave, but just double check the manual and jumper position as master/slave
jumper position is not physically the same on each drive.

Are the drives happy when sharing an IDE cable with a hard disk? Set the HD
jumpers to master and CD jumpers to slave and vice-versa.

Yes. It's because it is a Sony.
Is there a solution to this?

Yes. Take it back for a full refund.

Sony is a promiscuous whore who will **** with anyone. They rebrand
OEM drives and then do not support them. They are not woth the powder
to blow them to Hell.

We have about 100 DVDs that are all no good because we burned them
with a Sony. They barely played when new and 6 months later not a damn
one of them will play. We used different brands of media, so we can't
blame it on the media.

Yes all that was checked and tried in different combinations i.e. with new
drive as master and slave with other drives vice versa.

I haven't tried the new Sony as a slave to the HDD but the other drive is
working fine as slave to HDD with the Sony as the Master in 2nd IDE. Just a
pain in the neck to try and swap things around again!!

Thanks for your advice anyway..

Only Sony that I've found so far with this problem... Others that I've seen
work fine with other drives on the same cable..

Anyone else found the same problems with Sony?? If so I'd like to know
now!!

Take my advice and get rid of that piece of crap as soon as possible.

Buy an NEC 3540.
