DVD drive won't recognize CDs, but only DVDs

My Windows XP DVD-RW drive does not recognize original or copied CDs bu
does recognize original DVDs. The error asks me to “please insert dis
into Drive D” when there is one in already. This problem started when
was copying mpeg files from my hard drive onto a CD-R disk using th
Sonic burning software that came with my new Dell computer. I copie
one disk just fine but on my second attempt the transfer stopped.

Was I doing something wrong in my copying the files or could it be
software or hardware problem? But, I can play DVD movies just fine.
tried to reinstall my Sonic software but can’t because it’s a CD.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Does it, or does it not, see original CDs?

hi there may have been an interupt error when writing your cd try rewriting
cd at a slower speed and avoid interupts!

DVD/CD drives contain a one laser pickup for CD
and another for DVD.

Sounds like your CD laser is gone.

Sadly, in this era of cheesy optical drives,
this and other problems are not uncommon.

I had the same problem. turns out it was the hardware. had to send the
drive back to HP and get a replacement. that was annoying
