DVD Drive stuck even though Vista says there's no problem.

I have had my new HP computer with Windows Vistas Home Premium since
Christmas. So far, I've had for major system problem. Two were crashes that
occured while using Windows Movie Maker. HP tech reps were able to solve all
but the last problem.

Last night I received notice from HP updates that a new firmware was
available for my DVD lightscribe drive. So, I downloaded it and Vista began
to install the update driver. After about five mintures, I began wondering
why it was taking so long to complete the install process. I went to move my
mouse and the system was frozen.

I manually shut the system down and rebooted and was pleased to not see the
Sofe Mode screen. Everything seemed fine until I tried to open the DVD drawer
to copy some data files. I've spent about four hours with two different HP
techs and they couldn't find the solution. So they are shipping me a new DVD
drive, but I'm doubtful its a hardware issue.

I tested the DVD drive with PCDoctor, which failed the SCSI test due to
ERROR - Missing String: libDapi5.p5p?

Any ideas?

Oh no... thats bad news!

you should be very careful when updating firmware! since you are writing on
the chip itself

I suggest you "dont mention" what happened and just tell HP its not working
and get it fixed from the warrantee

another thing you can do is look at the forums and or help desk of the
company that makes this Drive.. what brand is it?

Geez, do you have a reading comprehension problem? Re-read what bay-journal

Cheers.

I don't *think* anyone here is an expert at interpreting PCDoctor results.

The bad DVD drive idea seems like a pretty sound one and a good next step.
The system freeze is why I'd be suspicious of a hardware problem.

I think it is. Or a firmware issue, which pretty much comes down to
the same thing. Your firmware update didn't work, and without
functioning firmware your drive is brain-dead. The new drive should
fix you up.

I want to thank everyone for their input.

I received my replace DVD drive today and installed it. Problem resolved.

I must say I'm not to optismic that I what the future with Vista has in
store for me. It register 76 error report in less than two month, and only
respond to two with a solution. Both solutions were updates that were already
installed?

I suspicious of my NVidia graphics card as part of my hang up problems while
using Windows Movie Maker. Why I've had two updates freeze my system during
updates is beyond me. That concerns me more than the rest of the problems
I've had with this new HP system with Vista installed.

Thanks again for your comment,

Your problem seems to be the same as mine. Is a new dvd drive the only
option? Mine was fine til I attempted to install an HP update last night and
it crashed. Now I cant open the dvd drive and it keeps telling me it is
currently being used and when I check out properties it tells me the device
is working normally!

Well, if any troubleshooting was done by the HP reps, I'd say they're on the
right track.
Shipping a new drive is their lowest cost at this point.

If the drive door simply won't open, even with the tricks HP tried, it's
either a bad connection, or hardware.

I hope they did have you try a few things, like removing and loading
drivers, and the classic paper clip.

Kay,

After trying all the standard problem fixes (deleting device, restore
points, etc.) the only solution was replacing the DVD drive.

It was suprising very easy to do, took less than five minutes on my system.
Side panel came off, front panel removed, detached two connections, slide old
one then new in repeating steps mentioned.
