DVD Drive Problem

Hi,

My DVD drive stopped working with all software after DVDFabDecrypter crashed
horribly while copying a scratched DVD from it to my hard disk and even
killing the DVDFabDecrypter process with task manager and using taskkill /f
/t from the command line failed to close the crashed DVDFabDecrypter window.

The DVD tray will open and close but if I try and read from a DVD in it
whatever software is trying to do the reading crashes. Reboots have not
resolved the problem.

I've read about similar problems but can't remember the solutions.

Thanks all.

Right click on the My Computer Icon on your desktop
and select Manage and select: Device Manager
(Or: Go to Start, then select 'Run' and in the Open field enter: devmgmt.msc
then click on the OK button)

After the Device Manager window opens, click the "+" to expand the
DVD/CD-Rom drives option.
Next, right-click on the CD/DVD Drive(s) you are having problems with
and select: Uninstall.
You may be prompted to reboot your computer, do not reboot!
Instead shutdown the PC and remove the cable to the CD/DVD
drive or drives. Now with the drives disconnected, boot the PC.
Check that the CD/DVD devices are no longer listed in
Device Manager. Now power down the PC, reconnect your
CD/DVD drivers. Windows should discover the devices and
reinstall the drivers.

Also:
You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive:
or you get an error code 31

Thanks JS.

Is there any way to do this without opening the PC - I have a physical
disability and will have to get someone round to open the PC for me?

Many thanks, I'll reply tomorrow as am off to bed right now.

Cheers.

Use System Restore to a previous restore point?

You can try what I suggested and just skip
over the part about disconnecting the drives.
It may or may no solve your problem but it's
worth a try.

Thanks JS.

It did work. That is to say uninstalling the problem drive from device
manager and then rebooting resulted in the 'new hardware found' notification
after the reboot and the DVD drive started working perfectly again.

Cheers.

Hi

I also use DVDFAB and also occasionally get drive freezes/crashes. What JS
said is spot on! I think occasionally NERO also interefers with the
registry settings for the drives of the drives.

However, I had another issue with the drivers on one of the DVD drives where
uninstalling/re-installing the device in Device manager did not work and
neither did physically unplugging the drive with the PC powered down. I
have 2 DVD rom drives on one IDE cable. I found that the copying speed of
the DVD drive connected to the IDE connection furthest from the mobo was
being limited to 2.0 MB/s and the cursor was very slow - i.e. system
resources where being over resourced. Seemed like corrupt drivers.

I had to do an XP Repair install to reinstall and fix the corrupt driver
for this IDE channel before the DVD drive began to behave correctly.
