DVD drive is missing from My Computer and Device Manager

I have gone through almost every possible fix I've seen on the Web. I've
tried deleting the upper/lower filters, that didn't work. The drive is not
seen in the Device Manager nor the BIOS. System Restores do not work. The
HDD is a IDE ST9160821A, and I have 1 GB of memory. I downloaded the
Microsoft Fix-It Program, and that didn't fix it either. I have a Toshiba
Satellite M45 S169 Laptop with XP SP3. I've disabled all start-up programs
to see if a program was blocking it, that didn't work either. I have not
recently installed or updated any new hardware. The only CD recording
program I have is iTunes. I uninstalled and reinstalled that; didn't work.
I've uninstalled Sonic DLA and Sonic RecordNow! on my system about a month
and a half ago, went back to the date just before I uninstalled it, no fix.
I really don't know what else to try.

Going by your words, "The drive is not seen in the Device Manager nor the
BIOS."

If it is not seen in the BIOS - it's a hardware failure. The BIOS has
nothing to do with the OS installed. It's hardware.

Replace the drive, replace the cables connecting the drive to your
motherboard, replace the motherboard if it comes down to it.
