I am an owner of a Windows XP Home Edition 2002 system, P4, sp2, auto
updates. Recently I have been having problems with my dvdrw drives (Lite-on
SHW-1635S and SHOW1693S). What is occurring is that every time I open the
tray on either the D:( SHOW-16393S) or E:(SHW-1635S) drive and place any kind
of disk in it (data, music, dvd, blank) and close the tray, the light come on
for apx. 5 sec then goes off. Nothing else happens. I even have the windows
autoplay function set to prompt me each time for what action to take. This
window is not even appearing. Something is not working properly.

In attempting to investigate further, I double click on "My Computer" to
look at drives. A windows opens, but there is nothing in it. I don't even
have the "flashlight looking" animation. At this point my system hangs up.
Attempting to close the empty "My Computer" windows results in the "program
not responding" msg, which soon opens the "end program" msg window and the
"error reporting" window. All attempts utilizing the cursor to close the "my
Computer" window fails. Other attempts to close things ultimately leads me to
the only choice left - a hard abort via pressing the on/off button and
holding it. The next time I boot up everything is working fine , until I
place a disc in either drive and close the tray. Then everything hangs again.
There has been many recent changes to my system which complicates solving my
drive problems. Other than the addtion of the 2 Lite-on drives mentioned
above, I have also 1) installed the software that came with drive (nero
express 6 OEM Suite 3), 2) installed Roxio Easy Media Creator 8 Suite C/s, 3)
Converted my Fat32 to NTFS, and 4) scanned for virus/trojans/malware
following suggestions in Dave Lipman's articles due to a possible infection.

Device Manager shows drives and the settings all appears to be OK. In
checking articles related to drive problems I also ran "Autofix". Autofix
acknowledges that there was a problem, but could not fix it. Below is what
Autofix log file showed.

Thank you in advance for any and all, suggestions and advise, to solve my

P.S. I'm guessing that either via the convert to NTFS, or due to a

problem. Again this is only a guess. And lastly, everything did work at one

Wow. It certainly looks like you did your research before posting.

To be honest, this is a weird one. My first (and only) suggestion would be
that because you know the hardware works just fine in another PC, you're
either dealing with a hardware driver issue, or a low-level Windows problem.
This provides you with two options:

1. Go out to the CD-Rom manufacturers' websites and download up to date
drivers for the devices, and load them into Windows.
2. Boot using the Windows XP setup CD and perform a REPAIR on your
existing installation. After that, go out to the Windows Update site and
install any critical updates.

Other than that, nothing much comes to mind. I've had situations in the
past where a hardware device just would not work under Windows, usually
after I did something stupid like transplanted the hard drive containing the
OS from one system to another, after which the only resolution was to
completely reinstall Windows from scratch. However, I hate to make that
suggestion right off the bat, when there's probably a much simpler solution
out there.

I would only add that you could try uninstalling Nero and Roxio
completely and, from the device manger, uninstall the dvd drives and the
ide drivers for the channel that they're on, reboot and let Windows
reinstall them all. Then see if the drives are accessible.

Hi Bob & Philip,

Thanks for responding to my question. At first I was concerned that my
problem was one that hasn't been encountered before. However, after deciding
to try the easier route Philip mentioned in his answer, before resorting to
the steps Bob mentioned, I am please to report that my problem has been
solved! Here are the steps I took.

I first uninstalled both Roxio & Nero ( By the way I hate those programs
that have uninstaller with them that don't remove everything. I had to go to
the program file folder to removed what was left behind). I then rebooted
my computer and ran "AutoFix" again. I was surprised when AutoFix informed me
that my default settings has been restored. After trying several disc (Music,
DVD, Data) I confirmed that both drives were working (the windows autoplay
window now appears). I didn't even need to go to the Device Manager to
uninstall the drives and let Windows reinstall them (something I done
previously when attempting to solve this problem). I almost believe that I
also may have not needed to run "AutoFix" based on what I believe what may
end up being a compatibility issue involving Roxio & Nero along with XP.

In looking a little deeper into each program I learned that they both have
modules that monitors the opening and closing of the DvD Drives tray. When I
originally installed Nero (Roxio was already installed), a window informing
me that "InCD" (the Nero Module) could not be installed because I had Roxio
installed. It requested that I remove roxio before proceeding with the
install. At that time I chosed not to install InCD. And the link Philip
mentioned is the link I saw during my research that clued me into the
possibility of compatibilities issues regarding Roxio. Although it reference
the Creator 5, I wasn't sure if it also applied to the Easy Media Creator 8
Suite, but I did however keep this in mind. I'll now be looking at this
compatibility issue more closely since I would really like to use Roxio as my
DvD authoring tool. Hopefully their web sites will have some info regarding
this. Should I find something of significant I'll pass it on.

Thanks for the suggestion/advise that helped me resolve this problem that
has been crippling my computer for 2+ weeks (that's the reason I was able to
do research - time to find answers). I always appreciate the help I get here.
Thanks again.

that my default settings has been restored.

Wow. It certainly looks like you did your research before posting.

To be honest, this is a weird one. My first (and only) suggestion
would be
that because you know the hardware works just fine in another PC,
you're
either dealing with a hardware driver issue, or a low-level Windows
problem.
This provides you with two options:

1. Go out to the CD-Rom manufacturers' websites and download up to
date
drivers for the devices, and load them into Windows.
2. Boot using the Windows XP setup CD and perform a REPAIR on your
existing installation. After that, go out to the Windows Update site
and
install any critical updates.

Other than that, nothing much comes to mind. I've had situations in
the
past where a hardware device just would not work under Windows,
usually
after I did something stupid like transplanted the hard drive
containing the
OS from one system to another, after which the only resolution was to
completely reinstall Windows from scratch. However, I hate to make
that
suggestion right off the bat, when there's probably a much simpler
solution
out there.

I am an owner of a Windows XP Home Edition 2002 system, P4, sp2, auto
updates. Recently I have been having problems with my dvdrw drives
(Lite-on
SHW-1635S and SHOW1693S). What is occurring is that every time I open
the
tray on either the D:( SHOW-16393S) or E:(SHW-1635S) drive and place
any
kind
of disk in it (data, music, dvd, blank) and close the tray, the light
come on
for apx. 5 sec then goes off. Nothing else happens. I even have the
windows
autoplay function set to prompt me each time for what action to take.
This
window is not even appearing. Something is not working properly.

In attempting to investigate further, I double click on "My
Computer" to
look at drives. A windows opens, but there is nothing in it. I don't
even
have the "flashlight looking" animation. At this point my system
hangs up.
Attempting to close the empty "My Computer" windows results in the
"program
not responding" msg, which soon opens the "end program" msg window
and the
"error reporting" window. All attempts utilizing the cursor to close
the
"my
Computer" window fails. Other attempts to close things ultimately
leads me
to
the only choice left - a hard abort via pressing the on/off button
and
holding it. The next time I boot up everything is working fine ,
until I
place a disc in either drive and close the tray. Then everything
hangs
again.
There has been many recent changes to my system which complicates
solving
my
drive problems. Other than the addtion of the 2 Lite-on drives
mentioned
above, I have also 1) installed the software that came with drive
(nero
express 6 OEM Suite 3), 2) installed Roxio Easy Media Creator 8 Suite
C/s,
3)
Converted my Fat32 to NTFS, and 4) scanned for virus/trojans/malware
following suggestions in Dave Lipman's articles due to a possible
infection.

Device Manager shows drives and the settings all appears to be OK. In
checking articles related to drive problems I also ran "Autofix".
Autofix
acknowledges that there was a problem, but could not fix it. Below is
what
Autofix log file showed.

rAutoFix [V5.2.3790.67]

device is
malfunctioning, or the wizard cannot determine the problem.

Hopefully this "Autofix" log will help you help me figure out what is
going
on and how to fix it. Finally, I can only add that I know for a fact
that
the
2 drives are mechanically & electrically sound (they work fine in
another
computer). If additional info is needed let me know and I'll provide
it.
Thank you in advance for any and all, suggestions and advise, to
solve my
drive problem.

P.S. I'm guessing that either via the convert to NTFS, or due to a
virus/trojan that some files are corrupted/ missing, or thru some
compatibilty issue with either/or Roxio, Nero, and XP that I am
having
this
problem. Again this is only a guess. And lastly, everything did work
at
one
time. HELP!!!

Remove the drives and reboot letting Windows redetect them properly and
reinstall them for you.

Right click on My Computer and select Properties. Then click Hardware then
Device Manager. Go down the list, highlight your optical drive(s), right
click and select Uninstall. Reboot.

If this doesn't help post back here.
